Tonga

The Kingdom of Tonga is made up of 172 coral and volcanic islands with a total land area of 747km², spreading over 360,000km² of sea area. The majority of Tongan households rely mainly on subsistence agriculture (include crops, livestock, forests and fisheries) to provide food for household consumption and to market for incomes for the families. Key commodities are root crops, squash and vanilla. However, from the agriculturally active households 95% were engaged in subsistence and semi-subsistence agricultural activities and only 5% in commercial activities. Imports of food items also play a major role in the diets of the Tongan households. The reliance on imported foods has further made Tonga vulnerable to global commodity price shocks as experienced in the recent years.

Opportunities to strengthen the gender dimension in a Pacific agriculture, nutrition and value chain development project

The majority of agricultural production systems are structured by gender roles and responsibilities, and as a consequence, any attempt to intervene in value chains will affect gender relations in some way. This will inevitably have wider consequences for value chain effectiveness and efficiency”. Gender justice is valuable in itself, but pursuing it can be what the World Bank calls “smart economics”.
